Who requires a cabin when your chums have one?
Dimitri Nixon

I mean, just driving past a Home Depot causes my eyes to glaze over. RN : My grandparents had a cabin on Sugar Lake near Annandale, Minn, and it seemed to be an enchanting part of my childhood. My granddad built it, and for him I suspect his weekend retreat was less about relaxation and more about having a bottomless outlet for his tinkerer's energy. That possibly explained the plaque hanging over his workbench that read, you must work like a slave to live like a king. Art was an engineer for Northwestern Bell, and he could build anything out of nothing. He framed the cabin out of recycled phone poles. I inherited Art's hair-loss gene, but his all rounder DNA? Nada. He preferred a rousing game of Russian Bank and a half-pack of Camel straights. They retired to Canada and made a completely charming year-round house and a country lake cabin in a provincial park. They were Finns, so it was regarded as having a wood-fired sauna close to the dock. They jerry-rigged a canoe fit for sailing to the lake's island. Somebody has to weed-whack the drive, haul the recycling back to the city and deal with the sewage tank. CP : My longtime mate, Wayne, has Gross Motor Abilities Mania, from which I have been lucky enough to benefit. As in, he plants trees and mows miles of hiking trails thru the woods around his Wisconsin cabin, and I show up to bird-watch and lollygag. RN : Come to consider it, our buddies Brad and Peter maintain a lovely lakeside place in northern Wisconsin, yet don't seem to possess so much as a Phillips screwdriver. When I had that ruined trailer home on my Wisconsin acreage, it was actually the Nightmare on To-Do-List Street. RN : Yes , Peck Cottage was a little too Orkin-to-the-Rescue. Right behind my deplorable shortage of talent with power tools, here's another excuse why I avoid cabin possession : mousetraps. |
