Perhaps its the way to hold a celebration for a victory, or ways to give point of view to a loss. This competition authorizes us to check ourselves and learn not only who we are, but how powerful we are. Infrequently we win, occasionally we lose, but these life lessons serve us well on and off the field. The lessons Coach Dana Weyandt taught her Genoa Lightning softball group go beyond the field. The group won the summer league championship this year, but they also won lessons in life that may stay with them forever. Weyandt was assessed with breast cancer last October at the age of twenty-seven. Her chemotherapy treatments finished in late Apr, and the regular summer league started in May. She coached thru fatigue and hair loss, occasionally sitting in the dugout, but she never missed a game. In sports, you learn not only to split victories, but celebrate those victories and weather losses with others who have a typical goal. They released balloons to celebrate the day she had her last chemotherapy treatment, and the day she had her last radiation treatment. The girls pushed thru the season undefeated in both the regular season and contest games, and won the summer softball league championship on July fourteen. Coach Weyandt, thanks for galvanizing, and teaching by example, an outwardly lost art in today's world. You taught your girls abilities which will benefit them through their lives. |
